Being fully present while both listening and sharing deepens the potential for understanding and relating. A willingness to embrace every experience, no matter what feelings are evoked, enhances our capacity to live life fully. Slow down, breathe, and relax as you simply observe, notice, hear, and take in what is being witnessed without judging, which conveys a supportive regard for the other person. Openly receiving what is being shared allows and encourages full expression by the person sharing. When sharing, slow down, sense inward, notice, and be with whatever enters your awareness. Welcoming all thoughts, feelings, and reactions helps one go deeper. Describing whatever is being experienced builds a capacity to relate to ourselves more consciously.
Fear associated with not being safe, not mattering, and not belonging (survival mind) inclines us to doubt ourselves and distrust others. Casting blame and taking blame are powerless states that produce much human suffering. And yet, individuals have the capacity to uniquely embody and express a wide array of amazing qualities that offer power, wisdom, feeling, and imagination. The wholeness experienced when one realizes their full range is the birthright and calling of each human being. Practicing “positive thinking” can help offset old habits of “negative thinking.” In the process, justifications the mind employs for critical judgment may arise. By listening to the doubting messages, tracing them back to their origins, and appreciating how and why they were adopted, a process of self-liberation can begin, in which a sense OK-ness replaces self-doubt.
This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they are a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice. meet them at the door laughing and invite them in. Be grateful for whatever comes. because each has been sent as a guide from beyond. -RUMI
